What does ACIS offer?

ACIS offers 10 weeks of free counselling, each session lasting 50-60 minutes.

ACIS also offers an Information Service for anyone seeking details about any aspects of mental health provision. Give us a call and our Information Officers are ready with up to date information about local and national resources and support agencies to help you find the right help.

What is counselling?

During times of distress or any particularly difficult period in a person’s life, counselling can help people explore matters which may be causing them concern or anxiety in a confidential environment, without being judged.

There are many counselling approaches; at ACIS we offer Person-Centred Therapy. This is based on the belief that we all have the potential to grow and change. The relationship between counsellor and client is of primary importance in order for clients to decide their own way forward.

How can it help?

Counselling can help people get a fresh perspective on a particular problem that might be causing distress. It can also help people explore possible solutions or just offer an opportunity to talk confidentially with someone who is unconnected.

As Person-Centred Counsellors, all of our staff and volunteers are trained in meeting clients where they are in their lives and valuing their individual experiences in an empathic and non-judgmental way.

Who are the counsellors?

ACIS is made up of an extremely dedicated and experienced team of individuals, many of whom work with us on a voluntary basis. All of our counsellors are trained and supervised by approved counselling supervisors.

ACIS operates according to the Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions published by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the main body which accredits and monitors the work of “talking therapists” throughout the UK as well as being COSCA (Scotland’s professional body for counselling and psychotherapy) accredited.

How do I make an appointment?

If you are aged 18 and above and resident in Aberdeen, you can make an initial appointment by phoning us on 01224 573892.

We’ll organise an initial meeting where you can discuss:

  • What has prompted you to seek counselling
  • The kind of help that matches your needs
  • What ACIS can offer you as a client
  • Whether we know of any other more appropriate services

You will then be added to our waiting list and matched with a suitable counsellor as soon as one becomes available.
