Volunteer Counselling

Volunteer Counsellors are an integral part of MHA

In the 1980s we established our Volunteer Counsellor Training Programme and we've since given hundreds of people the chance to learn valuable counselling skills.

Two of our counselling projects, ACIS (based in Aberdeen City) and One to One (based in Aboyne/Banchory) are predominantly staffed by our own in-house trained Volunteer Counsellors. Being a counsellor is hugely rewarding; supporting individuals at a vulnerable time in their lives, to look closely at their emotions and help them to find a way forward. All of MHA’s Counselling Projects offer Person-Centred Counselling, a modality that is based on the belief that are clients are experts in their own lives.

Commencing in January 2025, our next programme of in-house Volunteer Counsellor training will run for 12 weekends over 7 months, building on trainees' skills as a genuine, empathic, non-judgmental listeners, enhancing self-awareness, and supporting trainees to be able to offer a safe, therapeutic space to our clients here at our ACIS project in Aberdeen or at One to One in Aboyne/Banchory.
